Daniel Beals first became active in the community as a student at Queen's University, earning a BA in English Literature in 1996. Upon graduation, Beals moved to Calgary, where he would meet his wife Bonnie.

Following a three year hiatus, Beals returned to Kingston in 1999, where he began working for locally-owned St. Lawrence Cruise Lines, and has spent the last eleven seasons working in the waterfront tourism industry.

In 2005, Daniel launched his own small business as the sole proprietor of Dreadnought Media, a game publishing company.

Since the birth of his son in 2004, Daniel has made a conscious goal of becoming increasingly active in the community. His efforts have had him at the forefront of key issues and events in and around the Kingston area, including the McBurney Park Neighbourhood Association, Central Public School Parents Council, the Save Democracy in Kingston campaign, the New Frills Downtown Renewal Project and the Campaign to Save Kingston's Prison Farms.

Canada's NDP Continues to Move Forward!

NDP Leader Jack Layton

Canada's NDP has continued to move forward by addressing real issues and developing practical NDP policies to help you and your family.

In Kingston & the Islands, the NDP continues to grow. In both 2006 and 2008 we surpassed 10,000 votes in the riding, and membership is booming.

In 2008, the NDP made a commitment to a viable Coalition NDP-Liberal Government. This option has since been dismissed by Michael Ignatieff's Liberals in order to support the fiscal mismanagement of Stephen Harper's Conservatives.

The Kingston & the Islands NDP remains committed a better future for citizens of our region, and our efforts are reinforced by the continuing work of the Federal NDP as Canada's true opposition in Parliament.

'Why not Kingston?' asks riding's newest NDP candidate

Posted By MIKE NORRIS - Kingston Whig-Standard

Daniel Beals is the NDP candidate for Kingston and the Islands for the next federal election. Beals, 38, won the candidacy over Pauline Kuhlmann at a nomination meeting at the Ongwanada Resource Centre last night (Tuesday Sept. 22nd). Beals and Kuhlmann both ran for the riding nomination last year but lost to former city councillor Rick Downes.

Although a federal election may not be called until next year, Beals, president of the Kingston and the Islands NDP, already relishes the role of underdog.

"Why not Kingston?" he said. "No one thought Linda Duncan (an NDP candidate who defeated Conservative incumbent Rahim Jaffer in Edmonton-Strathcona last year) would win. "No one thought Thomas Mulcair (an NDP candidate who won the Outremont, Que., riding in a byelection in 2007) would win. "Why can't we win here?" Kingston and the Islands has been represented by Liberal and Speaker of the House Peter Milliken since 1988.

"We're not as far away as some people may think," said Beals of the NDP's chances in the riding. "People are cynical about politics. Politicians need to be productive. I want to engage in less talk and more action. I want to show it, not just talk it. "If people believe you have their best interests at heart, you can reach them regardless of your party."

One issue Beals is particularly passionate about is local transit, which includes a limited Sunday bus schedule. "The federal and provincial governments have downloaded so much onto the municipality," he said. "We need to support our transit system better. I'd like to address that. "The city has tried to do more; it's not the city's fault, but so much has been downloaded onto the city."

Throwing money at the problem won't solve it, Beals said. "We need to meet with other municipalities that are struggling with their transit systems and come up with a comprehensive answer," he said.

Kairos Funding Must be Restored

New Democrats slam Ministers for inaccurate statements and unwarranted funding cuts

OTTAWA - Canada’s New Democrats are demanding funding for social justice organization KAIROS be restored, following revelations that the cuts were made based on inaccurate information.

“There’s been an outrageous mistake made here, and Minister Oda must move swiftly to correct the record and restore the $7 million in funding that she has stripped from KAIROS,” said John Rafferty, New Democrat critic for International Cooperation. “A Minister of this government has said that KAIROS lost their funding because they engage in anti-Semitic activities, but that claim is demonstrably false so there is no pretense for the funding cut.”

Immigration Minister Jason Kenney made the erroneous charge during a recent visit to Israel. During a speech in Jerusalem on December 16 Kenney stated”: “"We have defunded organizations, most recently, like KAIROS, who are taking a leadership role in the boycott, divestment and sanctions against (Israel)." However, a document published by KAIROS in January 2008 explicitly stated that the organization did not support “any general boycott of Israeli products” nor “any use of sanctions against Israel.”

“KAIROS is a respected ecumenical organization that works to improve the lives of millions people living in poverty and conflict around the world,” added New Democrat Leader Jack Layton. “Mr. Kenney owes them and their member churches an immediate apology.”

KAIROS member churches include the Anglican Church of Canada, The Christian Reformed Church in North America, The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada, The Presbyterian Church in Canada, The United Church of Canada, The Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), The Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace, The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, The Canadian Religious Conference, The Mennonite Central Committee of Canada, The Primate's World Relief and Development Fund (PWRDF).
