Renee Stephen - On Your Side.

Renee brings a fresh face and boundless energy to the Kingston & the Islands NDP. Renee has a passion for social justice. She's seen first-hand how Stephen Harper's cuts to social services, education, and health-care affect middle-class and working Kingstonians. She believes that Kingston & the Islands has a need for real representation in Parliament, and is working to get local issues back on the national stage.

Since arriving in Kingston almost five years ago, Renee has worked as a lab technologist for the Faculty of Applied Science at Queen's University, helping to educate students about industrial and environmental sustainability. In between her lab duties, she developed a campus-wide energy-use monitoring system and initiated a green-roof retrofit project. Renee is a proud member of CUPE at Queen's, and served as a trustee for Local 254. She is now in her third year of a combined Environmental Studies / Philosophy degree at Queen's.

Her community activism has focused on the local independent media, as a volunteer for Kingston's non-profit magazine PiC Press / Independent Voice. She has written about issues that affect Kingstonians, from the shameful laws restricting the unionization of part-time workers at St. Lawrence College to the federal government's ill-advised approval of American water diversion from Lake Ontario. She now sits on the Board of Directors of the group.

Renee originally hails from Victoria, British Columbia. She earned a diploma in Electronics Engineering Technology from Camosun College, where she spent two years as a staff writer for the college newspaper. She worked for a year as an administrative assistant for the BC Ministry of Environment's Water Quality Branch. Before that, she was the media liaison for the UVic Women's Centre and the UVic Lesbian, Gay, & Bisexual Association.

In her free time, Renee works as a design and technology consultant for several local non-profit and charitable organizations, such as the Kingston Boys & Girls Club and the Brockville Community Foundation. She lives in Kingston's west end with her partner, a fish, two birds, and a cat.

The Fine Print

“At year's end, Layton is seen as more prime ministerial than his Liberal counterpart. The last time that happened, Ed Broadbent and John Turner were respectively NDP and Liberal leaders.”
